On May 18, 1980, at 12:18 AM, two events occurred on the same patch of continent, within the same astronomical day, separated by approximately nine hundred fifty miles. In Redlands, California, the proprietor was born. Eight hours and fourteen minutes later, in Skamania County, Washington, the north flank of Mount St. Helens failed.

By 8:32 AM Pacific Time the eruption had become the largest volcanic event in North American history since 1912 — a debris avalanche of roughly seven-tenths of a cubic mile, a lateral blast that flattened 230 square miles of forest, an ash column reaching the stratosphere within fifteen minutes. The proprietor's mother would not learn of it until that afternoon.

Modern physics has a vocabulary for this kind of pairing — entanglement — though the term is reserved for particles, not people, and the proprietor does not use it loosely. The hermetic tradition supplies an older one: as above, so below. The principle pre-dates the science by some millennia. The science has not contradicted it. The proprietor declines to insist either way.

The chart, for those who consult them, places the Sun in Taurus at twenty-seven degrees, conjunct the IC — the deepest house, the foundation. Chiron in Taurus at fourteen degrees sits beside it. Both rooted. Both buried at the bottom of the wheel. The Moon in Cancer holds water. Mercury in Gemini shadows the Sun. Mars and Jupiter meet in Virgo — the practical and the expansive in rare agreement. The mask is Aquarius Rising. The public-facing geometry is Uranus conjunct the Midheaven. The proprietor reads, in this configuration, as eccentric, future-leaning, occasionally electric. He has been called all three, by different people, on different days.

At present, transiting Chiron — the wounded healer, in the shorthand — sits at twenty-six degrees of Aries, completing an eight-year passage (2018–2027) through the territory of identity. First Taurus ingress: June 19, 2026. The proprietor's exact Chiron Return arrives 2028 to 2029. The Aries phase has been about who one is. The Taurus phase moves the wound to body, worth, ground. Salt. Fixation. The slow work of staying in place long enough for something to take root. This is also, not coincidentally, the phase in which the practice itself was conceived.

A volcano fails. A child arrives. A planet works its way through a sign and into the next. Forty-six years later, the proprietor's principal occupation is helping small, particular businesses rebuild what has broken — quietly, on the books, in the file tree, with the durable assets named correctly. The pineapple stays on the counter. The volcano stays in the record.

Woody founded WvH Hospitality in 2017 after more than two decades inside the dining rooms, cellars, and back offices of American hospitality — beginning in 1996, and including Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bistro, Dan Barber's Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Bracero Cocina de Raiz (a James Beard semifinalist), and the opening team at The Grand Del Mar — a resort Forbes rated a perfect fifteen stars.

What the hospitality résumé leaves off is that a second career ran alongside the first. Woody's first personal computer — an NEC Pentium 60 with a US Robotics modem — arrived in 1994, and he has been early on every wave of consumer technology since: BBSes, AOL, Prodigy, CompuServe (and the early ANSI-graphics renditions of the ██████████'s Cookbook then circulating those boards), the open web, mobile, social, cloud, crypto, and now the large-language-model turn. From 2000 to 2003, before the Navy, he worked contract telecom — installing central-office fiber-optic switching at the Transamerica Building in Los Angeles, including the gear that terminates transpacific cables carrying a meaningful share of the traffic between the United States and Asia. The hospitality work sat on top of three decades of tech instinct, not the other way around.

He also served four years in the United States Navy as an Operations Specialist — aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Stethem (DDG-63) and the guided-missile cruisers USS Chancellorsville (CG-62) and USS Shiloh (CG-67). Ballistic Missile Defense and Anti-Submarine Warfare, mostly; and a classified tour under Aegis BMD · Stellar Predator aboard the Shiloh. The Department of the Navy adjudicated him with a SECRET security clearance. Some doors open only once; what happened behind them stays behind them. He does not bring any of this up at dinner.

Between active duty and the Culinary Institute, he took community-college courses in sculpture (mixed media) and photography (35mm black-and-white, camera-only — no film development). He does not, however, speak French or Spanish. What he picked up — from years inside French kitchens, where the brigade ran in French, and from the Mexican prep cooks beside him on every line — is etymology, vocabulary, and the kitchen-floor patois of two trades. Reading: fluent. Listening: passable. Speaking: undocumented, and likely to remain so.

He holds an AOS in Culinary Arts from The Culinary Institute of America, an accelerated Wine & Beverage certificate from CIA Greystone, and is a Master Certificate Candidate at Cornell's School of Hotel Administration. He is a Certified Sommelier through The Court of Master Sommeliers and a CSW & CSS through the Society of Wine Educators. He held active F&B memberships through 2020 with the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, the Société Mondiale du Vin, the James Beard Foundation, and the Guild of Sommeliers — and in 2020 set down the tastevin. He cooks now only for loved ones, or for sacred occasions, when invited.

More recently, Woody has turned that same tech instinct toward AI implementation and the fragmented tech stacks that quietly run small businesses. Built in-house: the WvH Claude Bot — a forty-six-tool Model Context Protocol server connecting Claude to QuickBooks Online, used to run the firm's own books. He is, most accurately, an operator who builds tools — a student of Hermetic wisdom who believes the small business, like any great work, proceeds by solve et coagula: dissolve what does not serve, then quietly recompose what does.

Additional specialists are retained on an as-needed basis, when a project calls for it.
